Amongst the restrictions created by post-September 11 immigration policies, the Institute’s ninth decade saw a new avenue open for legal status adjustment. Provisions in the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) allowed immigrant women who were victims of domestic violence the opportunity to apply for a U Visa, thereby obtaining a work permit and green card. The Redwood City office increased their capacity to serve immigrant survivors of domestic violence, helping many women become self-sufficient, productive members of their communities.
