The Immigration Service supplied Institute staffers with the names and addresses of new immigrants. When they arrived in town, staffers visited each new family. When the depression threatened funding for this program, the Junior League stepped in to provide transportation so the Institute could continue to welcome newcomers and share information about available services and activities. As the long-term impact of the depression settled over San Francisco, Institute clients reached out to those less fortunate than themselves, forming Club Las Señoras, a cross-cultural social group that met weekly and assembled layettes for needy families.
