While prohibitive immigration and welfare laws passed by 104th Congress told immigrants, “you are not welcome here,” the International Institute and collaborators worked double-time to offer members of the immigrant community the respect, hospitality, and assistance they deserved. In the midst of all this change, International Institute’s San Francisco office moved to 657 Mission Street. Settling into a new neighborhood inspired fresh collaborations and innovative programs, like YouthCares, which hired and trained young people to assist the elderly living in the South of Market community.
