Title: Civic Engagement Coordinator

Location: Multiple offices: Napa (40%), San Francisco (20%) and San Mateo (40%) Counties  

Job Summary

The Civic Engagement Coordinator supports IIBA’s mission by conducting community education and outreach to immigrant communities with a focus on voter registration and education, and education on Census.  The Civic Engagement Coordinator will deliver informational presentations and engage immigrants and other community members at schools, colleges, congregations, community events, and community organizations.  Topics will include Know Your Rights, Census, voter registration/education, and referrals to legal services.  The goal of this position is to (1) identify and outreach to individuals IIBA has helped become citizens to educate them about the voting process (2) help those eligible to vote register to vote (3) educate immigrant communities about the importance of being counted in the upcoming census. This is a pilot project.  Initial efforts will be focused on Napa, San Francisco and San Mateo Counties. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Presentations: Conduct presentations to immigrant communities and allies on relevant immigration, citizenship and civic engagement topics and the potential benefits of participating in the census. 
  • Outreach: Identify and develop opportunities to engage immigrant communities in groups and individually at community events, nonprofit and public agencies, schools, colleges and faith congregations.  Develop strategies to reach priority populations in targeted locations, and respond to requests for outreach events.
  • Collaborate: Coordinate with IIBA’s Redwood City Program Director to help meet its outreach contract goals. Work with IIBA’s Communications Manager to support outreach strategies via social media.
  • Community Leadership: Contribute to IIBA’s visibility and active role in the community.  Represent IIBA at community events as needed.
  • Manage the development and implementation of civic and voter engagement program, including voter registration, non-partisan voter education, candidate forums  and voter turn-out efforts.
  • All other duties: Perform all other duties as needed and/or as directed by supervisor.

Expected Outcomes

  • New citizens will have increased knowledge and understanding of the voting process in the United States, so that they are confident in their abilities to make informed choices and complete their ballots.
  • Local residents, especially new citizens and their families will be more engaged with local candidates and elected officials, as a result of participation in local candidate’s forums. 
  • Citizenship preparation students and graduates will have increased their leadership and engagement by serving as peer outreach ambassadors, motivating their fellow students and graduates to register to vote as soon as they naturalize.
  • Immigrant youth, including Dream Club students, will have developed leadership skills by engaging with new citizens in their families and communities with information about the importance of voter registration and census participation.

•   Local residents will be informed about the importance of participating in Census 2020.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Education & Certification:
  • Work Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience in community outreach efforts, preferably with immigrant communities.
  • Outstanding public speaking skills in English and Spanish, with ability to conduct outreach and education events to large groups and be interviewed on television, radio, and taped video. 
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Understanding of immigration processes a plus!
  • Ability to act independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Commitment to serving immigrants and sensitivity to the needs of the low-income, culturally diverse newcomer community. 
  • Proficiency in a Windows/PC environment.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Bi- Lingual – English and Spanish fluency REQUIRED.
